Vote: Help us narrow the field to find the 16 best burnt ends in KC

We’re on a mission to find Kansas City’s best burnt ends — and we need your help.

The charred tips of smoked beef brisket are served at dozens of local ’cue spots. You can order them chopped at Gates Bar-B-Q, on a burger at Q39, or sauced on white bread at LC’s.

This list of 25 barbecue restaurants was compiled using reader recommendations from Twitter. Don’t see your go-to spot? Check “Other” and write it in.

Voting ends on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The 16 barbecue joints with the most votes will advance to our March Madness-style burnt ends tournament, which starts on March 7. Each week, we’ll organize the restaurants into “games” and ask readers to vote for their favorites.

Zarda burnt ends

The ultimate winner — the maker of the best burnt ends in Kansas City — will be revealed on April 4.

If this sounds familiar, it might be because we made a french fry bracket in 2017, and a fried chicken bracket in 2016. Go Chicken Go sizzled its way to the top of the fried chicken tourney, and Joe’s Kansas City crunched the competition to win the fries contest.

Will Joe’s score a repeat win this year in the burnt ends bracket? That’s for you to decide.

Royals bringing former Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz into spring training camp

The Royals are working toward an agreement with free-agent right-hander Clay Buchholz on a minor-league contract, a source told The Star. Buchholz, 33, missed almost all of 2017 after surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right forearm. He made two starts for Philadelphia before the injury, posting a 12.27 ERA in 7 1/3 innings pitched. He was traded from Boston to the Phillies before the 2017 season. With the Red Sox, Buchholz was a two-time All-Star and pitched on the 2013 World Series championship team.
